For centuries Jazirat Al Hamra was a thriving pearl-fishing community, until 1968 when every inhabitant abandoned their coral-and-mud houses almost overnight. Officially the exodus was down to tribal disputes and the lure of oil wealth, but locals whisper of something else: jinn moving into the empty alleyways. For generations young men have dared each other to spend the night among the ruins, and the tales of those who met something in the dark and were never the same again are legion. Today the village is widely known as the ghost town of the Emirates.
