Hard-hearted Katharina von Salamanca was cursed by a poor farmer – and is said to haunt the Renaissance castle in Spittal to this day.
The Renaissance castle of Porcia in Spittal an der Drau is haunted, tradition holds, by Countess Katharina von Salamanca, notorious for her greed and harshness toward her subjects. A poor farmer she had treated mercilessly is said to have laid a curse upon her, and when she was later killed by a servant girl, her spirit was condemned to wander the castle without rest. Her portrait still hangs in the princely apartments, and staff and visitors have testified over the years to footsteps and a cold presence in the halls. The countess ranks among Austria's most famous castle ghosts – a fittingly fateful backdrop for the theatre festival's ghost plays in the castle courtyard.
