The Augustinian Church beside the Hofburg keeps the Habsburgs' hearts in silver urns behind a door by the choir — and, according to a Viennese legend, something else that will not leave the building. In the early 19th century several boys were up ringing the church bell one evening. Out of the darkness a figure suddenly came towards them: a white man raising his hand in a threatening gesture. The boys fled headlong down the stairs. One injured his foot so badly that he was left limping, and three others fell so gravely ill afterwards that their lives were feared for. Nobody has rung that bell for fun since. The church was consecrated in 1349 and is where the imperial family traditionally married.
