Beneath the Danube lies a palace of green glass where the souls of the drowned are kept captive under upturned earthen pots.

The marble girl with fish in her lap in the Stadtpark is the Donauweibchen, the Danube maiden. The fishing families along the unregulated river told of a vast palace of green glass on the riverbed, where the Prince of the Danube lived with his wife and children. On long tables stood upturned earthen pots, and beneath them he kept the souls of the drowned imprisoned. The prince himself appeared in moonlight as a huntsman walking the bank, and any fisherman who dared speak to him was lost: he was seized in an iron grip and dragged down into the racing current. The Danube maiden was the gentler figure, the one who rose to warn those she favoured before the floods came. The fountain was raised in 1865, a few steps from the Wien river.
