The House at the Skull

Wien · Østrig · House

The rake ordered a skull to send its mistress to him by night. She came — and only a priest who happened to be present kept her from taking him.

The house 'Zum Totenkopf' in the Bognergasse belonged, according to legend, to the young nobleman Konrad von Kirchberg, notorious in Vienna as the city's Don Juan and worst libertine. One day he caught sight of a skull in St Peter's graveyard and mockingly charged it to invite its former mistress to dine with him that night. The woman really came. She stepped into his chamber as a spectre out of hell and was ready to take the blasphemer down with her. That a devout priest happened to be in the house was the only thing that saved him that night. Afterwards the building got its sign: a skull above the door, as a warning to everyone who passed. The Bognergasse lies a few steps from Am Hof, in a quarter full of old house-name legends.
