A farmer in Inzersdorf am Wienerberge went out into his garden one evening and heard a carter cursing and beating his horses further off on the wretched road. The farmer pitied the animals, went over and said it was no use flogging them to death, and heaved the wagon out of the rut with his own strength. The carter thanked him, asked how far it was to the next village, and invited him to ride along a while — perhaps another bad stretch was coming.
