The Redbank Range tunnel outside Picton opened in 1867 as one of New South Wales' first railway tunnels but closed to trains as early as 1919. In 1916, 51-year-old Emily Bollard took a shortcut through the tunnel to visit her brother — and met a train head-on in its 180 metres of darkness. Her figure, often described as a faceless woman in white, has been reported in the tunnel ever since, sometimes appearing her age, sometimes far younger. The tunnel went on to store mustard gas for the air force in World War II and to house a mushroom farm in the 1950s, and today ranks among Australia's most haunted places.
