In this 13th-century keep in central Ghent, 'Geeraard the Devil' and 'Geeraard the Moor' are said to chase each other through the halls to this day.

Geeraard de Duivelsteen is a Gothic 13th-century keep by the old port of Ghent, named after the knight Geeraard Vilain, known to the people as 'Geeraard de Duivel' – Geeraard the Devil. A rich body of legend grew around the dark stone house: the tower was said to have been built by a spirit, the cellar was called the devil's pit, and folklore holds that the ghosts of Geeraard the Devil and Geeraard the Moor still chase one another through the building. Over the centuries the house served as a knight's residence, monastery, asylum and prison, which hardly softened its reputation. It still stands in the heart of the city, a stone's throw from the cathedral.
