Het Steen, Antwerp's oldest building, is a medieval fortress on the bank of the Scheldt – and home turf of the city's most notorious legendary figure: Lange Wapper. According to 16th-century tales, this shape-shifting trickster spirit haunted the waterside and made the streets unsafe at night; he could start as a small man and swell into a giant stepping over the houses, and drunkards staggering home late were his favourite victims, followed and frightened out of their wits. At the foot of the fortress stands Albert Poels' famous 1962 statue of the giant leering down at two terrified drunks. The legend is kept alive by the city's museums and is one of Flanders' best known.
