Teacher, journalist and radio voice Ana Maria do Couto, known as May, died of cancer in 1971 at just 46, after an agonising illness during which her screams were heard from the house in the Bandeirantes district. After her death, night-time passers-by began to report that the screams continued – and that a woman's figure was seen walking on the veranda. The mansion became infamous as one of Brazil's most haunted houses. Decades later came the explanation: the voice echoing from the house was a gramophone recording of May's final public speech, played at night by her grieving mother to remember her daughter. Yet many in Cuiabá still swear that not every sound came from the record player.
