The gravedigger who dropped dead in the middle of a burial is still said to sit by the Matarazzo family mausoleum, keeping watch over his final grave.

The Cemitério da Consolação, opened in 1858, is São Paulo's oldest cemetery and a sculpture park of the city's elite – Tarsila do Amaral, Monteiro Lobato and Mário de Andrade all rest here. Its most famous ghost is the gravedigger: during the burial of a daughter of the powerful Matarazzo family, he collapsed and died on the spot. Ever since, staff have told of screams and wailing near the vast mausoleum – and of a figure sitting silently beside it, gazing at the grave he never managed to close. Night watchmen also report shadows drifting along the dark cypress-lined avenues.
