Cemitério do Caju – officially the São Francisco Xavier cemetery – is one of Rio's oldest and largest burial grounds. In the autumn of 1918 more than 5,000 victims of the Spanish flu were buried here in a matter of weeks, in a city suffocating under the epidemic. Gravediggers and visitors tell of shadowy figures moving between the tombs in the dawn mist, and of voices calling out names from empty vaults. Most famous is the lady in white, who appears among the headstones and vanishes without a trace when anyone tries to approach her.
