Tradition holds that the Elevador Lacerda is haunted by the workers who died during its perilous construction. Passengers and guards tell of voices in empty cars, shadows in the passageways and a cold that rises on the last runs before midnight — as if the lift were carrying more than it should.

The elevator opened in 1873 and is Salvador's foremost landmark: 72 metres between the upper city's square and the harbour district below, its cars carrying tens of thousands of people up and down through the cliff every day. That same height has made the spot one of the city's darkest, associated with falls from the viewing platform, and those stories too have been woven into the legend of who rides along at night.
