Griffintown – Mary Gallagher's Corner
Québec · Kanada · Urban site
Every seven years, headless Mary Gallagher is said to return to William Street in Montreal in search of her head.
On 27 June 1879, Mary Gallagher was murdered in a flat on William Street in Griffintown, Montreal's Irish working-class quarter — her friend Susan Kennedy attacked her with an axe and severed her head. Kennedy was sentenced to death, later commuted to life in prison. Stories soon circulated of a headless female figure seen near the murder site, and in time the legend settled into its familiar form: Mary returns every seventh year, on the anniversary of her death, to search for her head. Griffintown parents long frightened their children with "Headless Mary", and to this day the curious gather at the corner of William and Murray streets every seventh anniversary.
