Among the mansion ruins of Dundas Valley walks coachman William Black, who hanged himself when denied his beloved.

The Hermitage mansion rose in the 1830s and burned in 1934, leaving only stone walls standing in the woods west of Ancaster. Legend tells of William Black, a coachman who fell in love with landowner Otto Ives' niece Angelica but was refused her hand because of his low station. The next morning he was found hanging in the stable, and as a suicide he was buried without ceremony at a nearby crossroads. On moonlit nights he is said to weep among the ruins, rope in hand, forever searching for his lost love.
