No. 33 Xiaoshihu Hutong
Peking · Kina · Haunted house
In this old princely courtyard near Xidan, restless voices are said to chant poetry and play strings in the night.
The courtyard at No. 33 Xiaoshihu Hutong is counted among Beijing's four great haunted houses. It was home to Wu Yingxiong, married into the imperial family yet kept as a hostage and executed when his father rebelled against the Qing, and his embittered spirit is said never to have left. The compound later housed a clan school where Cao Xueqin is believed to have begun Dream of the Red Chamber. For generations, neighbours have told of zithers and strings sounding from the empty halls after dark, of chanted verse, and of a woman's weeping that falls silent the moment anyone opens the door.
