Olsany Cemeteries
Prag · Tjekkiet · Cemetery
Prague's only vampire carries the nickname Dopijec — the Drink-It-Upper. Across fifty hectares of graves he is also called Bloody Knee.
Olsany is the largest cemetery in the Czech Republic: fifty hectares, an estimated two million burials, laid out as a plague ground in 1680 and extended until the plots became a city of their own. Here belongs the figure known as upir Dopijec — Krvave koleno, roughly the Drink-It-Upper with the bloody knee, and he is the one vampire Prague has truly made its own. In life he was no fearsome figure at all, rather a shabby wretch in threadbare clothes, seldom shaved, who frequented the cheapest taverns and never had the money for his own beer, drinking instead what others left in their glasses. That is where the nickname came from. After death he is said to have kept the habit of taking what others left behind, and still searches among the Olsany graves.
