Strahov Monastery and Uvoz
Prag · Tjekkiet · Monastery
A Premonstratensian brother rides at night between Strahov and Nerudova on a white horse. The habit is in order — the head is missing.
Between the walls of Strahov Monastery and the steep lane called Uvoz, the bezhlavy premonstrat is said to ride. The legend tells of a brother who loved dice more than his office. Midway through a game word came that a dying man was waiting for the last rites, but he could not tear himself from the table and sat on until shame won out. Then he flung himself onto a horse and rode at reckless speed down the dark lanes to reach the deathbed in time. The horse bolted, and in the gallop he lost his head. Ever since he is said to come every night: a rider in a white habit on a white horse, headless, moving between Strahov and Nerudova Street. He is still hurrying to a dying man who long ago stopped waiting.
