In Bernau's executioner's house lived the man who burned the town's 'witches' – 28 names on the memorial stone bear witness to those who died in the torture cellar and at the stake.

In Bernau, just north-east of Berlin, the executioner's half-timbered house still stands by the town wall. The town's headsman lived here into the 19th century, and the house holds Bernau's darkest chapter: the witch persecutions. According to the town chronicle of 1736, twenty-five women and three men were tried for witchcraft between 1536 and 1658, and in the years 1617–1625 alone twenty-two people died on the scaffold. The accused were tormented in the torture cellar – the 'witches' cellar' – where the farmer Gürgen Crone died under torture before his corpse was burned at the stake. Since 2005 a memorial stone beside the house has carried the names of the 28 executed, and inside the old house a museum shows the headsman's craft: the sword, the tools, and the outcast life of the trade. Few places around Berlin bring the terror of the witch trials this close.
