"If you helped hunt, you can help carry" – the hunchback on the Kindel bridge handed the night walker a parcel and fell backwards into the water. Inside the parcel lay a human leg.

The Kindel is a hilly wood with swampy hollows between Schildow, Schönfließ and Lübars on Berlin's northern edge, threaded by the Kindelfließ stream. The legend, recorded in the saga collections of Oberhavel, tells of a man from Hermsdorf crossing the Kindel bridge late one night. Out of the mist on the far side came the din of a wild hunt – whooping, hallooing and the baying of hounds – and on the bridge railing sat an old hunchbacked man with a parcel in his arms. As the walker drew near, the old man held out the bundle with the words: 'If you helped hunt, you can help carry.' Then he let himself fall backwards into the water and vanished, and the cries of the hunt fell silent in the same instant. At home the man opened the parcel – and found a human leg. The wood's name carries its own sorrow: in the Napoleonic years foreign soldiers are said to have killed a child from Lübars and buried it at the stream's end – hence Kindel, the child's wood.
