Anna Sydow, 'the beautiful foundress', has been said since 1598 to appear in the Berlin Palace as the Hohenzollerns' white harbinger of death.
In the Berlin City Palace – today rebuilt as the Humboldt Forum – the White Lady ranks among Germany's most famous castle ghosts. The figure is said to be Anna Sydow, the beloved of Elector Joachim II, known as 'the beautiful foundress'. The elector made his son swear to protect her, but after his father's death in 1571 the son broke his oath and had Anna locked away in Spandau Citadel, where she died. From the death of Elector Johann Georg in 1598, the court began speaking of a woman in white appearing in the palace corridors before deaths in the House of Hohenzollern – reports that recurred for centuries, last discussed before the fall of the empire. Now that the palace stands rebuilt, Berliners wonder whether the White Lady moved back in.
