Sterrenberg & Liebenstein Castles

Rheinland-Pfalz · Tyskland · Castle

The 'Hostile Brothers' of the Rhine are still divided by a feud wall – two castles, two brothers and a love that ended in a curse.

Above Kamp-Bornhofen on the Middle Rhine, the castles of Sterrenberg and Liebenstein stand a stone's throw apart, separated by a high feud wall. According to the legend of the 'Hostile Brothers', the brothers Heinrich and Konrad loved the same woman, the fair Hildegard. Betrayal followed betrayal – one left on crusade, the other took his betrothed – until the wall was raised between the castles so the brothers would never have to see each other again. In some versions it all ends in a fatal duel at dawn. At night the brothers are said to still pace along the wall, while Hildegard is believed to have ended her days in the convent below, where the river glides quietly past.
