The Countess of Bagsværd's castle burned one night in 1909 – five years later she took her own life, and the ruin still stands by the lake.

At the forest edge by Bagsværd Lake stand the white ruined walls of Aldershvile, an 18th-century mansion that met a dramatic end. Here resided Angelica Pierri, born into poverty in 1870, who inherited a diamond-mine fortune from her second husband and gained a countess's title through her third marriage – popular wit dubbed her the Countess of Bagsværd. She insisted the estate be called a castle, and lived there in extravagant luxury until the building was devoured by flames one night in 1909, most likely arson according to the investigation. Ruined in the fire's aftermath, the countess took her own life with poison in 1914. Since then the ruin has stood as an eerie memorial in the castle park, and evening walkers speak of a sorrowful presence among the empty window openings – as if the countess never quite left her burned castle.
