Koldinghus has a mistress of the house who never left. Dowager Queen Dorothea, wife of Christian III, lived here as a widow for twelve years from 1559, and according to tradition she still walks through the castle every night to check whether the guests are behaving decently. Several people are said to have met a stern ghost who knocked the hats off those who kept them on inside the castle chapel. The house has had no shortage of reasons to be haunted. In the winter of 1807–08 some 30,000 Spanish mercenaries were quartered in Denmark, and a number of them ended up in the medieval castle; on the night of 29–30 March 1808 they had stoked the guardroom fireplace so fiercely that the joists above caught fire. Within days the royal castle was a ruin. Today you walk through a building where modern architecture has been set inside the burnt shell.
