Rosenholm Castle

Østjylland, Hornslet · Danmark · Castle

The white lady had walked the corridors for centuries — until builders opened a tower wall and found the skeleton of a young woman inside.

Rosenholm was begun in 1559 by the Rosenkrantz family and has stayed in the same hands ever since, with its moat, Renaissance gables and a library few outsiders have seen. The castle's best-known story is of the white lady, said to roam restlessly through the corridors every night. For a long time it was dismissed as ordinary manor-house folklore — until one of the towers was being restored and workmen broke through a wall. Behind it was a hidden void, and in the void lay the skeleton of a young woman. Who she was, why she was walled in and when, nobody knows. What is certain is that the legend came first and the discovery afterwards, which is precisely the wrong order for a story you had planned to dismiss. The castle sits still behind its moat.
