The island had its spøgenkikkere, people who could see what had not yet happened, and when owls screamed from the church tower everyone knew someone was going to die. A merrier legend tells of the trickster Pua Modders from Sylt, who convinced the Rømø people that the church could be pushed a few ells southward: he set a red jacket as a marker on the south side, had them shove at the wall until the jacket was out of sight — and turned up in that same jacket the following Sunday. Along the churchyard wall stand the whaling captains' gravestones in a row, and inside hang the hooks they had forged for their silk hats.
