The ox-blood red castle on its hill in the middle of Langeland has one story that keeps coming back, and it concerns the guest rooms. A friend of one of the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig daughters, who often stayed the night, woke again and again to heavy footsteps in the corridor outside: someone approaching slowly, stopping outside her door — and that was where it ended. No one stood there when she opened it. The house is first mentioned in 1231, then as royal property. In 1672 the dilapidated castle came as a dowry when the young Margrethe Dorothea Rantzau married Frederik Ahlefeldt, and the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig family has owned it ever since — over three hundred and fifty years in one hand. A house lived in that long collects stories. The moat lies still, the walls are as red as ever, and the stairs still creak by themselves.
