Along Quito's street of the seven crosses rolls a burning carriage when the hoarse drum sounds past eleven.

Quito's oldest ceremonial street is lined with seven stone crosses and has been considered the path of the condemned since colonial times. This is home ground for the legend of La Caja Ronca: past eleven at night, a dull, hoarse drum and a mournful flute may be heard approaching, heralding a procession of hooded condemned souls around a carriage wrapped in flames. Two night watchmen are said to have been found unconscious after witnessing the cortege between García Moreno and Rocafuerte streets. Whoever hears the drum is wise to bolt the door – or risk being chosen to join the march to the other side.
