Torre Baró Castle
Barcelona · Spanien · Torn · Uhygge 2/5
The castle above Nou Barris was built as a luxury hotel around a dying child's hope – when the family's children died the works were abandoned, and the silhouette on the ridge earned a cursed name.
High on the Collserola slope above Nou Barris rises a castle that never became anything: the Castell de Torre Baró, built in the early 1900s as the future luxury hotel of a planned garden city. By local telling, the Sivatte family raised the tower partly for the sake of their sick child – mountain air and nature were to be the cure. But the children died, struck down by the epidemics of the age; grief extinguished the project and the works were abandoned half-finished. For decades the empty shell stood as a ghost castle over the city; neighbours spoke of lights in the window openings and a small figure on the parapet at dusk. Even today, restored as a viewpoint, the tower is popularly called the cursed castle – a monument to a dream that died with its children.
