The colourful undulating roof of Santa Caterina market hides a dark foundation: here stood the mighty Dominican convent of Santa Caterina, founded in the 13th century and demolished after the convent burnings of 1835. Around the year 1800, stubborn rumours ran through the city that black magic and satanic rites were practised behind the convent walls – stories that have clung to the site ever since. When the hall was renovated around the turn of the millennium, archaeologists uncovered the convent church and scores of graves beneath the floor; some of the skeletons are displayed in the market's own exhibition. Market workers have told of cold draughts rising from the ground, sounds of chanting after closing, and the sense of someone moving between the stalls – as if the Dominicans never accepted the demolition.
