Plaça de Sant Felip Neri – Graveyard of the Hanged

Barcelona · Spanien · Kyrkogård · Uhygge 3/5

The square rests upon the graveyard of the hanged – and legend tells of the youth who mocked a skull here and received a visit from its owner that same night.

The small hidden square by the church of Sant Felip Neri is built over the Fossar dels Penjats, the graveyard of the hanged, where the city's executed were dumped in unconsecrated ground during the Middle Ages because no churchyard would receive them. The quarter's most retold legend concerns a young man who found an unearthed skull here, kicked it along before him and mockingly invited the dead man to dinner. That same night there came a knock at his door: a skeleton stepped in, sat down at his table, and reminded him that the dead are not to be trifled with. The square is still described as one of the Gothic Quarter's most silence-laden spaces, where the trickle of the fountain is the only sound and visitors say they feel watched.
