One head beneath each of the seven arches — that is how the Lara infantes were shown to their father, and the alley bears the name still.

According to the epic legend, the severed heads of the seven Lara infantes were hung in the alley beside the house, one beneath each of the seven small arches, after being carried to Córdoba to be shown to their captive father Gonzalo Gustioz. The alley is still called the Calleja de los Arquillos. The legend has been attached to this spot since the 16th century, when the historian Ambrosio de Morales identified it as Almanzor's prison.

The house's documented history is hardly brighter: its 15th-century owner Juan de Córdoba, thought to have kept a secret synagogue in the vaults, was condemned to death by the Inquisition in 1504. The owners have noted that at the equinox a shaft of light falls through the walls straight toward the steps down to the house's enigmatic basin, and tie it to a hidden treasure.
