Spain's only excommunicated village has a castle where witches were said to hold their sabbaths – the curse from Veruela abbey was never lifted.

The village of Trasmoz at the foot of Moncayo is the only one in Spain to have been excommunicated and cursed by the Church: after a feud with the monks of neighbouring Veruela abbey, the abbot pronounced a curse in the thirteenth century, draping the crucifix in black and reciting Psalm 108 – an act never revoked. For centuries the castle above the village was branded a den of witches, where sabbaths and black magic supposedly took place, legends immortalised by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer in his letters from Veruela in 1863. Today the castle houses a witchcraft museum and the village crowns a Witch of the Year, but its cursed reputation endures.
