The abbot who found the spring lived in the Devil's Cave beside it — until one day he vanished without trace, and the cave kept its name.
Legend says a French abbot fleeing the revolution came to the woods at Hoznayo in the late 18th century. He discovered the healing water of the spring and settled in the cave right beside it — until one day he vanished without a trace. The spring was named after him, and the cave is still called the Gruta del Diablo, the Devil's Cave.
Around the water, the spa complex of Aguas de Hoznayo was raised in 1880, with a hotel and bathhouse where society came to take the cure, before it fell into obscurity and was left behind. Today the resort's ruins stand in the damp forest by the river Aguanaz — stairs, vaults and empty pools under the moss — and the Spanish press counts the place among the country's eeriest abandoned spas.
