Around the ruins of Minas del Horcajo, folk belief still lives about full-moon nights, witches and wolves in the Sierra Morena — and in the middle of it sits what actually happened. On New Year's Day 1901, three children went out to pick strawberry-tree berries and disappeared. Three days later their skeletal remains were found in the woods, their shoes still on their feet and their caps filled with berries. The crime was never solved, but a contemporary theory pointed to a doctor said to have used the children's blood as a supposed cure for his tubercular son.

The silver-mining village held some 4,500 people before the workings closed in 1911 and it was slowly abandoned. The television programme Cuarto Milenio has ranked the site among Spain's eeriest.
