La Tablada Sanatorium

Madrid · Spanien · Sanatorium

Patients threw themselves from the windows in despair — and in the empty shell by the mountain pass, traces of black rites keep turning up.

The sanatorium's history tells of patients who in despair threw themselves from the windows or hanged themselves in the wards. Visitors and urbex groups who get inside the empty shell report apparitions, light phenomena and recorded voices — and regularly find traces of black rites in the empty wards.

La Tablada opened in 1924 beside the old road over the Sierra de Guadarrama, in the presence of King Alfonso XIII, as an institution for the tubercular poor of Madrid. The front line ran straight through here during the civil war and the building was damaged by shelling. A new wing was begun in 1950 but never finished once mountain sanatoria had had their day, and the shell has stood by the road ever since.
