Château de Combourg

A count with a wooden leg is said to stump up the tower staircase at night, followed by his black cat.

Château de Combourg in Brittany was the childhood home of the writer Chateaubriand, who himself described the castle's ghost in his memoirs. Legend has it that a former Count of Combourg with a wooden leg climbs the staircase of the Cat Tower at night, accompanied by a black cat. During renovations in the 1870s a cat skeleton was in fact found walled into the masonry — a medieval protective offering now on display for visitors. The castle, steeped in gloomy romanticism, is open for guided tours.
