Haut-Kœnigsbourg is Alsace's mightiest medieval castle, enthroned on a forested peak above the Rhine plain. Around it hovers the legend of a white lady atoning for a grave but unknown sin: every New Year's Eve she is said to walk three times around the walls, then climb the keep and stand gazing out across the plain. She belongs to Alsace's many white ladies, condemned to wander between the worlds of the living and the dead. The castle, grandly restored around 1900, is today one of the region's biggest attractions.
