The rocky isle and its medieval abbey rise from a bay notorious for quicksand and tides that have swallowed countless pilgrims over the centuries. Tradition holds that a figure in a white robe appears in the fog banks – some say the knight Geoffroy de Saint-Clair, others a monk – guiding the lost to safety or warning of the incoming tide. Medieval accounts already spoke of wandering monks and knights seen around the abbey, and the mount's years as a prison added darker layers still. Around Michaelmas, villages along the bay traditionally kept vigils for the wandering souls of the dead.
