During the Revolution the royal palace on the Île de la Cité became the antechamber of death: 2,781 prisoners were sentenced and taken from here to the guillotine. The most famous of them, Marie-Antoinette, spent seventy-six days in a cell before she was driven away in the cart on 16 October 1793. The cell was later turned into a memorial chapel, and that is where the legend lives. Guards and visitors have described a woman's figure in white sitting utterly still in the room and dissolving as you come closer, sudden cold in the corridor outside, and a low murmur like prisoners in the Rue de Paris — the long hall where the condemned were gathered before the journey. The clock in the Tour de l'Horloge has run since 1371 and seems to be the only thing here that never stops.
