South of the city wall, in a green valley that gave the place its name, Robert the Pious had a castle built. When the king died excommunicated in 1031 nobody dared take on the estate, and the ruin became a refuge for beggars and brigands. By the 13th century rumours told of something worse: a green monster with a long white beard, half man and half serpent, armed with a great club, drifting among other phantoms and beasts and driving off anyone who came near after dark. The noise from the site was described as a deafening din audible in the city. Louis IX solved the problem by granting the land to the Carthusians in 1257 — and according to the chronicles the apparitions ceased that same year. What remained was the phrase aller au diable vauvert.
