The smith fell asleep in despair over an impossible commission and woke to finished ironwork — then the doors refused to open.

The cathedral's side doors carry ironwork so fine that medieval masters could not explain it. The legend supplies an answer. A young smith named Biscornet was given the commission, realised it could not be done in time, and met a stranger who offered him everything he needed in exchange for his soul. When his helpers returned, Biscornet lay unconscious in front of a work perfect down to the smallest scroll. But on the day of the inauguration the doors would not move. Only when they were sprinkled with holy water did they swing open, and the smith is said to have been released from his oath — and to have died shortly after. The welds in the ironwork are so numerous and so skilfully hidden that nobody has managed to count them, which has kept the legend alive for seven centuries.
