The king's grandson who chose the cloister over the crown walks the walls at night — sometimes with his grandmother Clotilde beside him.

Saint-Cloud takes its name from Clodoald, grandson of Clovis. When his brothers were murdered in the struggle for the Frankish kingdom he was spirited away, renounced the crown and withdrew to a small village on the Seine, where he lived as a hermit and was later canonised; the village took his name. Local legend says he never left it. Older residents have described a young, whitish and almost translucent figure brushing along the walls of the old village at night, silent and never looking aside. On certain days of the year he is said not to be alone: then his grandmother Clotilde walks beside him in a diaphanous gown with a gold necklace set with garnets, and the two take the road towards Paris and the Sainte-Geneviève hill to meet Clovis and the brothers Thibaut and Gonthier.
