Hangman's Hill, High Beach

Put your car in neutral at the bottom of the hill at High Beach — and feel it slowly pulled UPHILL, towards the old hanging tree.
On a narrow forest road at High Beach in Epping Forest, cars defy gravity. Left in neutral at the foot of the slope, a car begins to roll slowly — uphill. Local legend says it is the hangman's rope that pulls: the hill is said to have been an execution site where the condemned were dragged up to an old tree on the crest, and the force drawing vehicles towards it is the noose seeking new necks. Generations of Essex and London teenagers have driven out at night to test the phenomenon, often dusting the bonnet with powder to catch ghostly handprints. Sceptics explain it as a classic gravity hill — an optical illusion of the surrounding slopes — but that has not stopped reports of figures between the trees and the sense of being watched from the crest.
