Plague-stricken highlanders walked here to lie down among the dead and await their own end — the bones still fill the stone chambers.

By the Argun river near the deserted fortress village of Shatili stands a row of low stone crypts with small window openings. When plague swept through Khevsureti, the infected chose not to die at home and endanger the living: they walked to Anatori themselves, climbed in through the opening, lay down on the shelves among those already dead, and waited for the end. Through the openings you can still see floors covered in skulls, femurs and vertebrae. The region was almost entirely depopulated, and the site is counted among the eeriest places in the Caucasus.
