Behind the Panathenaic Stadium, on Agras Street in Mets, stands the house that belonged to the Master of Horse of King Constantine I — known locally simply as "the stables". It is one of the few Athenian haunted houses still lived in, and that is said to be its best protection. The neighbourhood story concerns lights that switch on and off in rooms where nobody stands, and shadows that place themselves between the visitor and the door when someone has climbed into the garden to take photographs. Those who try it rarely try twice. The legend has survived more than a century and recurs in every list of haunted Athenian addresses, always with the same advice: keep walking.
