The Areopagus and the Revered Ones
Attika · Grekland · Stone formation
In the cleft below the judgement rock lived the Erinyes. Athenians did not dare say their name — they called them only "the revered ones".
The bare rock below the Acropolis was the murder court of Athens, and Athenians believed it had been chosen for a reason. In the hollows and clefts beneath it lived the Erinyes, the avenging goddesses who pursued anyone who had spilled kindred blood until he broke. Nobody dared say their name aloud, so they were called by euphemism the Semnai, "the revered ones", or the Eumenides, "the kindly ones" — a name the legend says they only accepted after Orestes was acquitted on this very rock and they agreed to stop hunting him. Entering their sanctuary without cause was thought unlucky, and Athenians sacrificed black sheep to them in darkness. The rock is worn glass-smooth by feet.
