At the mouth of Porto Rafti bay a colossal marble figure stands on the crown of a small island, visible from the whole gulf. Sailors named it Raftis, the Tailor, because it appears to sit with a piece of cloth across its lap, and called the neighbouring islet Raftopoula. The local explanation is different. According to the legend it was a young woman of great beauty pursued by a suitor who would not relent; unable to escape, she asked the gods for help, and they answered by turning her to stone on the island's highest point, looking out over the sea she could not cross. The figure is 2.35 metres tall and was already noted by an Italian pilgrim in 1395. The island can only be reached by boat.
