Parnitha Sanatorium
Attika · Grekland · Sanatorium
In the basement that held the morgue, the souls of the dead are said to gather at night — and the cold down there does not belong to the season.
Legend says the souls of the dead gather at night in the basement beneath the Parnitha sanatorium, in the room that held the morgue. Visitors describe an icy chill in exactly that spot, voices and footsteps in the corridors above and shadows moving in the empty window openings. The building is often called the most haunted place in Greece.
The concrete shell high on the mountain north of Athens opened in 1919, when tuberculosis was claiming thousands of lives and the mountain air was the only treatment there was. Countless patients died here before the hospital was finally abandoned in the 1980s. Today the ruin is covered in graffiti, ringed by fire-scarred forest, and a fixture on the itineraries of ghost hunters from across the country.
