The builder's twin sons died before the mansion was finished. Kodály is said to have met them on the stairs — and workmen still vanish inside.

Long before the turn of the century, the grand mansion on Kodály körönd was already called the haunted house. The legend names the twin sons of architect Gyula Bukovics, said to have died while the building went up in 1883–85 and never to have left the stairwell. The composer Zoltán Kodály, who lived on the circus that now carries his name, is said to have met the two boys on the stairs himself and described them to his guests. The story revived during the renovations: two workmen disappeared inside the empty building and were found unconscious — one in the former state apartment, the other in a cellar — with no memory of how they got there. Caretakers have spoken of a locked chest in the attic and of footsteps on floors where nobody lives. Neither of them has ever been able to explain what happened during the hours they were missing.
